Its name, derived from the Malayalam words "Munu" (three) and "Aaru" (river), signifies the confluence of three rivers: Mudhirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundaly. Once a summer retreat for the British, Munnar's colonial legacy is evident in its architecture and tea estates. The region experiences a cool climate year-round, with temperatures averaging between 10°C and 25°C, making it a year-round destination. History of Munnar
Name Origin – The word Munnar means “Three Rivers” (Moonu = three, Aru = river in Malayalam & Tamil), referring to the confluence of the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala rivers.
Early British Interest (1870s–1890s) – During colonial rule, the British discovered Munnar’s cool climate and hills, making it a summer retreat.
Birth of Tea Industry (1895–1900s) – Munro partnered with A.H. Sharp, who established the first tea plantations. Soon after, large estates were developed, laying the foundation for Munnar’s global reputation for tea.
Kannan Devan Hills Plantation (KDHP) – In 1897, the famous Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company was formed, which became one of the largest tea producers in South India.
