History of Munnar

  • Name Origin – The word Munnar means “Three Rivers” (Moonu = three, Aru = river in Malayalam & Tamil), referring to the confluence of the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala rivers.

  • Early British Interest (1870s–1890s) – During colonial rule, the British discovered Munnar’s cool climate and hills, making it a summer retreat.
